Celebrate Nate
As April 12th approaches, on what would have been Nathan’s 41st birthday, the all too familiar feelings of pain and sorrow that come with this huge loss begin to set in again. As the years have gone by, I have begun to take solace in better understanding who my brother was, and just how big his heart was. We were all beneficiaries of the time that we were able to spend with him, and as I have witnessed, he gave his time to so many. Whether, it was music, sports, books, or just life in general, there was no better person in my life with which to share a conversation. I feel that is the common denominator with all of us. He shared his life with so many, and that is not always an easy thing to do. From the heartfelt notes he wrote to others who had lost a loved one, to countless letters to his brothers who served, Nathan did so many things that many may think to do, but don’t always accomplish.
On the night of his visitation, a manager from Longhorn shared a brief story that has always stayed with me. A young hostess at the restaurant had fallen on some especially bad times financially, and Nathan took it upon himself to gather a collection of money from those that were willing to help her out. Most of the staff was receptive to his efforts and donated a few dollars to help her out. I like to think that I would similarly help out. Well Nathan gave the entirety of his tips for this weekend night, which as the manager explained were likely well in excess of $100. This gesture, she will likely remember for the rest of her life. You may have had similar experiences with him which is further testament to his character. These stories give me comfort and fill me with great pride as I continue to know the impact that his life had on others. But at the same time, it makes the loss that much more profound.
In the spirit of his life and his giving nature, I encourage you to make a donation to help BCAN not only advance bladder cancer research, but also to support those afflicted by it.
